Business groups have raised concerns over the administration of £5bn of new grants for hospitality and high street firms – given delays in the issuing over other coronavirus-related grants by local authorities. As of January 18, around a third of £2.4bn of grants to be distributed through councils for the winter wave of COVID-19 have been paid out, while almost 90% of the £1.1bn Additional Restrictions Grant has not been distributed. Councils have warned that the number of grants available, changes to restrictions, and the discretionary nature of the grants have complicated the process, and Craig Beaumont from the Federation of Small Businesses says councils have been left “worried of making mistakes”.
