Converting retail to residential could give life to town centres

Carol Lewis says that converting vacant shops into homes could provide an opportunity to turn high streets into local hubs for residents working from home. Analysis by Savills estimates that there is 158m sq ft of vacant retail space, equivalent to nearly 13% of retail units. Lewis says that a shift towards home working could lead to the establishment of remote working and meeting centres in mixed-use developments alongside retail, restaurants and homes.
