Restrictions drive company closures and hit job postings

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show 14% of the UK workforce was furloughed in the week to December 27, up from 11% the week before, while the proportion of companies still trading during the second half of December fell to 71% from 84% in the earlier part of the month. The ONS report said that the latest lockdown had taken a toll on the jobs market, with data compiled by job search platform Adzuna showing that the number of postings fell by five percentage points in the week that ended on January 8. Online job adverts are at 72% of the level in the same week last year. The report said: “The overall decrease in online job adverts coincides with the formal announcement of national lockdowns in England and mainland Scotland in early January 2021, ordering the public to stay at home except for essential purposes. This decrease is also consistent with the previous year, suggesting a decline in seasonal recruitment after the Christmas period”.
