Almost 2m off work due to the pandemic

Almost 2m people have been off work for at least six months, according to a report from the Resolution Foundation, with a total of 1.9m having either lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic, or being placed on furlough long-term. The figure is far higher than official estimates of around 1.2m. The think-tank says that one in five of those off work fear they will remain unemployed – or will not have a job to return to when the furlough scheme ends on April 30. Elsewhere, a British Chambers of Commerce survey has found that one in four firms expect to lay off at least some staff unless furlough support is extended beyond the current end date.
