Spending down by a third as lockdown bites

The Office for National Statistics has published new credit and debit card data, revealing that for the week to January 14, purchases were 35% below their pre-pandemic February 2020 average – with spending on discretionary goods such as clothes, cars and furnishings hit particularly hard, falling by 49%.
